NEW DELHI | MUMBAI: With two days for implementation of the goods and services tax in India, the country’s pharmaceutical industry fears that availability of medicines may be adversely affected because some traders in their supply chain have yet to comply with norms of the new regime.

The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists, which represents over 8 lakh chemists, has assured the government that supply of drugs will remain uninterrupted, director Ameesh Masurekar said.

However, almost 20,000 drug distributors still do not have systems in place to handle the GST rollout, said pharmaceutical companies.

“It appears sections of the trade are not yet fully prepared for the GST regime,” said Deepnath Roychowdhury, national president of the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association, a grouping of small and medium pharmaceutical companies.

Many stockists and retail chains, especially those in small and rural regions, do not even have a GST number in place, said drug makers. “Stockists are saying that they are still not ready (they still do not have their GST numbers). This is mostly the case in small towns and rural India, where many of our chemists do not even have computers,” said RC Juneja, chief executive officer of Mankind Pharma Ltd., which supplies to about 5,000 stockists, at least 50% of them in rural India.
