Pharmaceutical Research Firm Plans 320 Jobs in Missouri
Associated Press (10/03/13) Blank, Chris

Missouri officials report that a Canadian pharmaceutical and biotechnology contract research company plans to spend $31 million expanding its operations in St. Charles in a move that could create 320 jobs. The state is offering about $4.2 million to Pharma Medica Research Inc.'s expansion project through the Missouri Quality Jobs Program. The company is based in the Toronto area and conducts research and development for pharmaceutical companies and performs trials. Pharma Medica Research's work includes scientific affairs, medical writing, bioanalysis, data management and clinical trial monitoring. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said he met with company leaders earlier this year during a convention in Chicago. "This substantial investment will further strengthen Missouri's position as a leader in bioscience," Nixon said. The governor's office said Missouri has more than 4,000 bioscience, agribusiness and life science companies already operating in the state. Pharma Medica Research plans to rehabilitate a building in St. Charles to expand drug trial operations that previously housed a clinical research organization. The company said establishing a research center in St. Charles will help it work with more clients and compete globally.

New Program Places Blinn Students on Cutting Edge of Biotechnology
KBTX (Bryan/College Station, TX) (09/16/13)

The Blinn College (Blinn) Therapeutics Manufacturing Program has created the class Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) Procedures and Documentation. The program features 69-credit hours and offers an Associate of Applied Sciences degree and an Advanced Training Certificate for students who already hold a science-based bachelor’s degree. The course trains students for entry-level positions in manufacturing and quality control with businesses that develop and deliver therapeutic products. Students who earn the associate degree are qualified for entry-level positions in manufacturing, quality control and quality assurance. Students who earn the Advanced Training Certificate can obtain those positions and entry-level regulatory positions. The Texas A&M University system recently announced a new biopharmaceutical center at Blinn. Companies like Kalon, Lonza, GSK and Caliber have established operations in the region because of that announcement.

Biotech Powerhouse: West County Companies Gain International Reputation
Newsmagazine Network (09/23/2013) Enright, Carol

St. Louis could be transforming into a global biotech research hub. Monsanto announced a $400 million expansion at its Chesterfield Village Research Center, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center announced a $45 million expansion to make room for 100 new scientists at the Creve Coeur facility, and Danforth Center invited experts and officials from the world to its Ag Innovation Showcase. All of those happened this year and officials say there are a lot more points that make St. Louis a biotech hub. There is a strong concentration of biotechnology companies and research facilities in the region. Further, there is a booming research and startup community developing in the area. Most of the growth is being driven by collaborative work in plant and bioscience companies. Officials add that thousands of jobs could be created by companies flocking to the area and scientists stand to earn upwards of $70,000 salaries. There are also beliefs the life science renaissance underway could spur innovation and make St. Louis attractive to young talent.

Don’t Be Naïve: 7 Things to Know Before Taking a Biotech Startup Job
Xconomy (09/16/13) Timmerman, Luke

Luke Timmerman, biotech industry insider, has compiled seven things to keep in mind before accepting a job at a biotech startup. First, Timmerman suggests getting very acquainted with the senior management team. Additionally, get to know as many people in the company as possible, other than the CEO. Learn how far along the company is in development and what are the chances it will see true long-term success. If a position is accepted learn what role will be played and if there will be room to grow as the company grows. Determine if stock options are available, but be aware of the risk involved should the company fail. Potential employees would do well to know their worth in terms of salary. Knowing someone that is a corporate attorney, HR consultant, or venture capitalist can help with that information. Finally, learning about the company culture in depth is very important. This should include values, work habits, processes, and relationships.
