Instead, reps try to persuade medical providers about the benefits of their drugs so they will prescribe them more commonly to patients. Interview questions will try to test your ability to sell pharmaceuticals.
Persuasion
Because pharmaceutical sales relies heavily on the art of persuasion, the "Pharmaceutical-Rep" site says you will undoubtedly hear a situational question like "Tell me about a time when you utilized persuasive skills to change others' perceptions of an idea or product." Your ability to provide a relevant and effective example for this question goes a long way in conveying your qualification for the job. If you have sold a controversial medicine or one that was met with resistance, explain how you overcame the challenge.
Challenges
The Job Interview & Career Guide site says you will probably hear the question "What is the most challenging aspect of being a pharmaceutical salesperson?" It is noted that new pharmaceutical reps commonly respond by indicating the challenge in meeting with medical providers. This is not the best answer, according to the site. Instead, share a regular challenge of the job which is persuading the medical providers to switch from an existing drug to your new drug in treating patients. This shows you understand the purpose of the position.
Drug Effects
State University explains that sales reps must have a basic understanding of the human body and how certain drugs affect it. It is very difficult to persuade health care providers that you have the best medicine for certain ailments if you do not have a good familiarity with the topic. You likely will be asked to explain your familiarity with drugs targeted at specialized doctors you would sell to if hired. Use your knowledge and research the industry.
Typical Day
"How do you perceive a typical day for a pharmaceutical sales representative?" is another likely interview question presented by the Job Interview & Career Guide site. The point of this question is to test your willingness to put in the time and effort required to work in pharmaceutical sales. It is indicated that medical professionals are often available early (around 7 a.m.) or late (up to 9 p.m.). Between travel and long hours, the interviewer needs to know you can perform the work required.
