WorkingAmpicillin belongs to the group of beta-lactam antibiotics, and is able to penetrate Gram-positive bacteria. The drug inhibits the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis, which ultimately leads to cell lysis.
Ampicillin is available in tablet, capsules and liquid forms. The amount of drug should be taken as per the doctor's prescription. The drug should be taken at evenly spaced intervals. The capsules/ tablets/liquid are available in varying potencies of 250mg and 500 mg depending on the severity of the individual case.
DosageAdults: 250-500mg 8 hourly or as required
Children:125-250 mg 6 hourly or according to age
Infants: 50- 150 mg/kg body weight in 2-4 divided doses
Contra- Indications: Hypersensitivity to penicillin
